Muang Ngoi, little paradise in north Laos
Muang Ngoi is my favourite place in Laos. I wish I would have had more time to hang around there and walk around its amazing countryside.
The village itself has only one “road”, not paved, borded with local wooden houses. Life looks very simple and the street is often crowded with children playing or old people selling local products.
A short 3 hours minibus ride from Luang Prabang will take you to Nong Khiaw. All the guesthouses will arrange this trip for you (included a hotel pick-up) and it’s not really cheaper to get to the bus station yourself. Once you’re in Nong Khiaw, you can walk through the village to get to the pier. Slow boats at regular schedule will take you to the small village of Muang Ngoi.
As usual, many people will come and find you at the arrival point to try to sell you their rooms. Listen to them, if they come it means they need to sell their rooms and they’ll probably give you a very good deal! (from 30 000 for a double room or bungalow). Some guesthouses have tiny rooms for 20 000 (for 2 people), but it’s worth paying a little extra and having your own bungalow on the river! Two guesthouses have a great all-you-can-eat buffet for breakfast (for 25 000 kip). Good for big eaters!!
There are lots of things to do around Muang Ngoi. The first one is…. CHILLING !! The atmosphere is so special there that you can only be comfortable and peaceful.
There are many caves to visit around, some of which are full of water and very nice to swim! Bring a torch or candles! Don’t forget the entrance fee of each one is 10 000 kip!
We walked around the countryside, visiting tiny villages with lovely inhabitants, walking through fields surrounded by amazing karstic pics, crossing rivers. A must-do !!!
So you’ve got my point?? GO THERE !!!
